Pagent of the
Masters 2003
By Debbie Grant
You know summer has arrived as Laguna Beach
once again hosts the world famous
Pageant of the Masters. The local tradition began in 1933 as a way to
attract
visitors to the budding artist colony. For 71 years volunteers have
“acted out” works of art
from nearly every aspect of life…great works of art to postcards.
Though
amazing artistry, special lightening and volunteers’ ability to “freeze
frame”
you will find it hard to believe they aren’t the real thing.
This year’s theme is Portrait of the Artist. A
wide range of art "celebrates what it takes to be an artist, the
personal sacrifice, the thousand uncertainties along the way, and in
the end, the art itself" says pagent director Challis Davis. Paintings
such as William Wendt at Work painted by the Laguna artists close
friend Willaim Griffith beautifully capture this years
theme. As tradition deems the final living picture is
The Last
Supper. (When we were given a tour back stage I have to admit it
was
odd to see a mannequin with a brown wig labeled “Jesus” among other
heads
representing the apostles.)
This unique venue is a great way to introduce your
children
to a variety of art. Challenge your children to discover the
history
of each work presented and try to find other works from each
artist.
The show starts as you enter the Pageant grounds. Be
sure
to plan extra time to wander the Festival ground. Local artists
are
on hand showing and selling their work. You will find everything
from
sculptures to jewelry each unique and at every price level.
Make a day in Laguna Beach by
also attending the Sawdust
Festival and Art-a-Fair located across the street from the Pageant of
the
Masters Festival grounds.
A couple of tips I recommend will increase your
enjoyment
of the Pageant. First, allow plenty of time to get through the
summer
traffic. This time of year Laguna Beach streets and the canyon
are
packed with locals and tourists all trying to get to the same
areas.
Second, park in the designated parking areas along the canyon and take
one
of the provided shuttles. Third, if you get uncomfortable in
stadium
seating bring a cushion. And lastly I encourage you to bring a
stadium
blanket because the canyon can get cool in the evening even during the
hottest
time of summer.
The Pageant of the Masters is performed nightly from July 5th through
August
28th. Saturday, August 29th will conclude this year’s run with a
gala
fundraiser. hosted by
